Carolyn Bertozzi is the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Chemical & Systems Biology and Radiology (by courtesy) at Stanford University, and an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. She received her undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Harvard University in 1988 and her Ph.D. in Chemistry from UC Berkeley in 1993. After Postdoctoral work at UCSF in the field of cellular immunology, she joined the UC Berkeley faculty in 1996 where she rose through the ranks to become the T.Z. and Irmgard Chu Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology. In June 2015, she joined the faculty at Stanford University coincident with the launch of Stanford’s ChEM-H institute.
Prof. Bertozzi’s research interests span the disciplines of chemistry and biology with an emphasis on studies of protein glycosylation pertinent to human health. Her lab is establishing a zebrafish model for NGLY1 Deficiency in order to accelerate our comprehension of the underlying biology and to test new therapeutic strategies. As well, she is developing chemical tools to profile glycoproteomic changes associated with NGLY1 Deficiency, with the aim of identifying new pathways for therapeutic targeting. Other projects in Prof. Bertozzi’s lab include development of next-generation biotherapeutics for cancer immune therapy, point-of-care diagnostics for tuberculosis infection, and tools for molecular imaging.
Prof. Bertozzi has been recognized with many honors and awards for her research accomplishments. She is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Medicine, National Academy of Inventor, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. She has been awarded the National Academy of Sciences Award in the Chemical Sciences, the Lemelson-MIT Prize, the Heinrich Wieland Prize, the Ernst Schering Prize and a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, among many others.
